What are Swimming Stroke Technique Lessons

Stroke Technique Lessons are exactly what they sound like. They’re lessons dedicating to improving your swimming stroke, specifically. We can go over any swimming stroke you need to practice on, be it breast-stroke, front crawl, back-stroke or butterfly. They might include starts, turns, stroke or pace work.  At stroke lessons you will have an instructor specialised in the technique of competitive swimming, either Becky or George, who have both swam at a national level. Rather than just being “learn to swim” lessons, stroke lessons are all about maximising your efficiency, correctness and speed of swimming.

Why should I take swimming stroke technique lessons?

So, for example, you or your child might be about to take part in a triathalon and whilst you know you’re a fantastic cycler and runner, your swimming isn’t up to scratch. Or, you might be swimming competitively. In both cases every second can count, and every mistake can cost you valuable seconds which might mean you end up in last place.

The big thing to remember is that it’s REALLY difficult to judge your own swimming stroke. You see yourself swim from your perspective and this means you don’t see the full movement of your body in the water as another person will. Similarly, unless you’re a specialist in swimming technique you won’t necessarily be able to judge what’s wrong with your movements. Judging swimming stroke technique can be quite advanced, and we often employ underwater cameras alongside observation to ensure the stroke in the water is recorded and that we can discuss the footage later.

Swimming technique lessons will, therefore, benefit anyone who is swimming competitively and really needs to work on optimizing an aspect or aspects of their swimming, not just learning to swim generally.
