Why Not Meet a Mermaid?

September 23, 2017

So, we’ve mentioned in a previous blog that mermaid swimming is quite an intensive exercise that depends on the dolphin kick and good synchronization skills. What this means in practice is that full-blown mermaid swimming isn’t a safe option for our swimmers that are early in their learning journey. However, we don’t think swimming ability should stop people from experiencing the joy of mermaids, so we’ve set up a separate class bracket called “meet a mermaid” to provide a full mermaid experience for all our mermaids and sharks regardless of their ability.

How are Meet a Mermaid sessions different?

Okay, in regular mermaid swimming we essentially teach monofin swimming. The learners feet are held in a fish-tail and the motion of both legs, combined with the movements of your body, are used to propel the swimmer forward in the water. This is often much faster than regular swimming without a fish fin. We may do this in groups and the swim might be synchronized, we also just have fun and be mermaids… obviously ?

In a “Meet a Mermaid” session, we obviously also have fun and become mermaids but the lesson is tailored to learners who might have trouble swimming with a monofin. Instead we focus on water-safety, basic mermaid moves, a makeover session and poses with photography opportunities. It’s all the memories of being a mermaid, without the session being exclusive based on swimming ability.

Both session types are really fun, both sessions types are full of mermazing experiences, but they are different.

How do I know I should book a Meet a Mermaid session rather than swimming?

To book mermaid swimming you’ll need to:

  1. Be at least 6 years old
  2. Be able to swim 25 meters comfortably
  3. Be able to submerge your face fully whilst swimming
  4. Be able to tread water in both shallow and deep water
  5. Be able to life your knees and turn 360 degrees in both directions
  6. Be able to demonstrate a basic dolphin kick for 5 meters

If you don’t meet those requirements but want to be a mermaid you should book a meet a mermaid session instead. You might also want to meet a mermaid instead if you don’t want to swim like a mermaid for some other reason.

Where do you do your Meet a Mermaid sessions?

Currently we do them in DW Sport’s Fitness in Elk Mill Retail Park, Oldham, Greater Manchester. We may expand the locations in the future to include Ashton or other place, but currently it is just our Oldham location.

What about mermaid parties?

Our mermaid parties teach participants mermaid skills and movements, contain mermaid games, mermaid poses and offer underwater photographs to take away from the day as a memory! To an extent, we can tailor them to the age of the participants though so speak to us when arranging your party.

So hopefully you now understand a little bit more about the differences between the mermaid sessions we have on offer and why we offer mermaid swimming and meet a mermaid sessions separately. You can find more information on our mermaid page here.
